The word virtual refers to a VPN’s ability to mimic a physical connection between a person and the rest of the world. Private means that all the data sent and received is known only to that person. It is called a network because VPN’s use secure servers with dedicated lines.

For a monthly fee, a provider protects the privacy of the user from the moment it is activated. It keeps the anonymity and helps the user in accessing inaccessible sites by concealing their IP address from other users. 

The IP in IP address stands for Internet protocol, codes that enable all computer-to-computer links. It represents the unique location of the computer, allowing emails and data to be sent only to the user. In addition to every user having one, every website has an IP address, but it is always given a dot-com type name.
